Morningstar's superior series switching provides many advantages. Series regulation reduces FET heating and lowers voltage stress on the power FET. A series configuration also improves protection against lightning surges and reduces switching noise.

The Morningstar SunSaver & SunKeeper series are Class 1, div 2 (A,B,C,D) hazardous location approved. Those are the ONLY solar charge controllers that are approved for hazardous locations, for use in such places as gas pumping stations, refineries, etc.

The new TriStar MPPT 45 and 60 amp charge controllers are expected in early December 2009 Prices will be about $439 for the 45 amp, and $540 for the 60 amp.

Low Voltage Disconnect (LVD) - Do I need it?

Short answer is, probably not. LVD will disconnect the LOAD from the batteries if the batteries get too low (around 11 volts). About the only systems that normally use the LOAD terminals are places like remote and unattended sites, such as battery powered camera monitors or alarm systems. Those types of systems should have the LVD option, but most other systems - such as RV's, small cabin systems, any system that uses an inverter do not need it. It is usually a bad idea to run an inverter from the LOAD output, as surges can blow the controller.
